Day Aid Care was started by Mary Elsie Atieno in the slum of Nyalenda in Kisumu, Western Kenya. Mary is 29 years old and the mother of four.  A few years ago, Mary found out that she was HIV+, as was her husband and youngest son.  Mary’s first reaction was utter despair, anger at her husband, and a sense of hopelessness, but soon she found her way.  Since discovering her status Mary opened, and now manages, the community-based organization, “Day Aid Care.”

Day Aid Care started with 12 members in 1998; today it has 450 members all living with HIV/AIDS.  Programs include active outreach, education, support groups, income-generating activities, counseling, in-home care, and care of orphans.  To support Day Aid Care, Mary actively seeks international, national, and local assistance.  She attends international AIDS conferences where she raises awareness of Day Aid Care, seeks funding, and learns new skills that will help fellow members.  Mary wants to “improve my [Mary] level of activism and commitment to the fight for the rights of people living with HIV.”

This website is committed to supporting the brave efforts of Mary Elsie and the other members of Day Aid Care who struggle through the daily trials of living with HIV/AIDS.

Mission Statement

To Love, Care and give Hope to the Infected and Affected.

Our mission is to encourage People Living With HIV/AIDS to live positively with the virus through counseling, to fight against the further spread of HIV/AIDS, and to care for the already affected and infected. The group’s main objective is to break the silence surrounding HIV/AIDS in order to help reduce further spread of HIV/AIDS and to identify and assist orphans and other vulnerable community members.

In Recent News:

The recent political violence in Kenya has left many people displaced, homeless and even worse dead.  This is a tragedy for the Kenyan people and many are suffering as they scramble to find food, shelter and safety.  Even more upsetting is that the political violence continues and daily we hear reports of further violence and upheaval in the once peaceful country.  Kisumu, where Day Aid Care is located, has seen some of the worst violence.  In the wake of the violence, to date over seventy DAC members have been driven from their homes, and now more than ever obtaining the essential medical care, drugs and nutrition they need has become a nearly insurmountable task.

If you are able to give, and of course anything can help, please use the link below.  The money collected will be used to buy food, blankets and build temporary shelters for the displaced members of DAC.
